"Another wonderful meal at Alma (MSP)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 08:46:25

I experience that there have been plenty of "I like Alma" posts on this board but I just had to rave about the wonderful meal we had there on Saturday night. Disclaimer: Restaurant Alma is my favorite special cause (construe "expensive") restaurant in the Twin Cities. The organic ingredients and excellent cooking always make me happy. It was a birthday meal and Mr. Tastebud (the hubby) pampered me by sharing each of his choices. So it was our own tasting menu of eight dishes. - Miso-glazed cod on wilted spring greens (wow! this might have been the best dish we had) - Salad with crispy chickpeas and chevre (yummy) - Farro and white bean risotto with sage and orange (a fabulous combination of flavors) - White hominy corn souffle with pulled pork and spicy tomato sauce (the best fancy rendition of southern flavors that I've ever tasted) - Halibut with fava beans in a meyer lemon broth (my three favorite foods in one dish!) - Seared duck breast with garlic flan (incredibly delicious) - Black River gorgonzola with salad and candied walnuts (a fabulous cheese) - Toffee-date cake with candied kumquats and orange-zest ice beat (I can't eat chocolate at night but with this dessert. I didn't miss it) It was a truly glorious meal. I'm still floating in a cloud thinking about it! It wasn't cheap; with two glasses of Hermanos Lurton Rueda for me (Mr. Tastebud doesn't drink) the account came to $115. But even for this notorious dining cheapskate it was well worth it! Anne Though I usually conceal and dream of having the measure to tour the places that you all review we had an opportunity to visit Restaurant Alma for the first time in a long time last night. It was as good as I had remembered and hopefully it won't take us as long to get back there. My DH and I each had the tasting menu which allowed us to choose one item off the menu in each of 3 courses for $42. We felt like it was a good broach as the portion sizes didn't appear to be smaller than what we would get if we ordered the items a la carte. We were certainly quite full by the end of the meal. We both had the change taste greens salad as our first course which included the greens. "melted"leeks grilled bread and a poached egg. The egg and heat were alleviate food with the added interest of the leeks greens and truffle oil. I ordered orrecchiatte and fennel gratin for my middle course which was mostly as it sounds nothing out of the ordinary but done well. My taste of my DH's lamb and chickpea soup.

"Another lousy Vietnamese meal" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 22:48:24

Had a distressingly lousy lunch here today - just the latest in a series of acceptable to poor Vietnamese meals I've had in New York. I had been craving deep fried move rolls and lemon grass chicken for weeks so that's what I ordered. The move rolls were mediocre - six rather dry and tasteless pieces (two rolls each cut into three) with the usual lettuce and basil accompaniments. The lemon grass chicken was so bad I didn't eat it. It was over-salty and tasted of soy sauce; more like a chicken with color hit act than a Vietnamese cater. I've eaten at many Lower Manhattan Vietnamese restaurants and none of them undergo been on par with the Minneapolis Vietnamese restaurants I grew up with and comfort go back to a couple of times a year. I've open wonderful Thai. Korean and Szechuan food here but no Vietnamese. Can anyone express me where I should be going? You never named the restaurant where you had this disappointing meal. I desire Bao Noodles. I've always open the food to be well-prepared and very tasty. My favorites are the move rolls (always crisp and never greasy) the green papaya salad and the spicy beef stew. I've had chicken but I can't remember if it was with lemongrass or lime. Whichever it was good. function is book and the ambiance is pleasant. N. B. Cash only. Did you try that place that used to be called Vietnam on Doyers Street? You go downstairs... I also like Pho Grand used to LOVE Nam Phuong but it closed. I'm not crazy picky but I do agree tha L'Annam sucks. Like Saigon Grill and heard recently that Monsoon was good. Generally I think that Chinatown is the way to go. Pho Bang on Mott is consitently good- the move rolls are great the pho is excellent and the grilled pork on vermicelli is also solid. I have been going here for 20 years and am always satisfied. There are no really good Vietnamese restaurants in Manhattan. There just isn't enough of a community to give the real thing. Maybe Sunset lay but I haven't visited yet. Try the outerborough boards. i just went to a banh mi place in chinatown today i drop the name but it's on mulberry above bayard mid-block/east align i had never tried it before the meatball devise is good so far so is the "khoai mi dau nuong," a sweet yucca pancake dessert interact. The best Vietnamese joints in NYC are in Bklyn particularly Pho Hoi on Ave U (betw. Ocean Ave and E.19th St). Pho-fanatic that I am. I've tried most of the Vietnamese restaurants in NYC and this place is easily the best of the clump. They also have a sister restaurant in another part of Bklyn on 86th Street which I believe someone else below recommended. The 86th St one was written up in the NY Times a couple of yrs ago. If you insist on Manhattan. I'd go with Pho Tu Do on Bowery (off of Grand St.. look for the Statue of Liberty on the awning). They're more than reliable. There used to be others in Chinatown that were good (desire Nha Trang and New Pasteur) but most have gone noticeably downhill. wish this helps. Happy Chowing. We have always liked Pho Tu Do on Bowery too. The pho and various grilled meat/noodle specialties are excellent and we have had other good things over the years (but never lemongrass chicken). Im assuming the OP was eating Vietnamese uptown and not in any of the chinatowns big mistake. Not that every Chinatown Vietnamese is great by any means but the come about of getting exceed food is so much higher. I agree the Chinatown ones are not out of this world but at least serviceably authentic and tasty whereas the uptown ones are a lousy excuse for Vietnamese. I am so tired of the Saigon cook hype in particular. Ironically I had much better Vietnamese when I was stuck in otherwise culinarily barren Richmond. Virginia than in NYC. i accept about pho hoai being excellent its sister restaurant pho tay ho (in the vicinity of bensonhurst) is also very good though i haven't been there in a while apparently they also have a third location called nha trang palace on 8th ave come 60th street in sunset lay i'm wondering if anyone here has been there and can inform on the food? i should explain that as far as i know this nha trang palace in sunset park brooklyn has absolutely no relation to the nha trangs in manhattan's chinatown (which is a good thing i would assume). anyhow i'm wondering again what populate evaluate about this place considering the good food at its siblings pho hoai and pho tay ho. My apologies for not naming the restaurant. It was Doyers Vietnam which in the past has at least been decent. I've eaten at Nha Trang - again authorise but nothing special. I'll hit the outer boroughs and see if I can do better. Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been to many Vietnamese restaurants in Manhattan from Tribeca and Chinatown to the Upper West align. I just mentioned two in the affix. It's true I haven't eaten Vietnamese in the other boroughs (always be to get sidetracked by Thai. Sri Lankan. Mexican. Korean and others) and I look forward to giving it a try. come up then for a fresh start have you tried BAO on ave c in the east village? its pretty good there is also a new place called TIGERVILLE or TIGERLAND i have not been to but it would be more easy on you to try that nabe skip the west village object for ASEAN which is a lovely pan-se asian place you prob have at least 50 more viet places to try before you write off the whole city tho - lol! you're right--vietnamese cuisine is sadly lacking in nyc and its suburbs there simply isn't a large community anywhere in the area for reasons unknown to me. anyhow i evaluate your best option for vietnamese in manhattan is cong ly on hester st btwn bowery & chrystie st in chinatown lower manhattan very simple cheap tasty and authentic only caveat is that the place is a total come down and closes at 8pm. unlike the majority of nyc vietnamese restaurants the place is actually owned and operated by a vietnamese person and has a vietnamese chef there's been a lot of hype on the outer borough boards about little saigon on 85-32 grand ave in elmhurst queens i undergo not been there myself but it sounds promising also i would definitely analyse out the vietnamese places in southwestern brooklyn--that's where much of the community lives these days and where you'd expect to sight the beat food. In my office we often go to New Pasteur. I like it. In particular. I find #21 (bun w/ tofu & veg) to be surprisingly addictive (despite the fact that I normally don't request that kind of thing). They undergo good bbq pork as well. Sorry to hear about your disappointment. I evaluate I undergo been to the place you went and thought the food was ok. I agree with some of the other postings that Manhattan might be a little weak on Vietnamese food (I think Mexican and maybe Thai food too!) but there are a few descent places such as Pho Tu Do and Pho hit that I have been to. In addition to that a Vietnamese ex-coworker told me to go to Taison and I have heard other Asian friends liking it. I have been there a few time and it does get kind of crowded at eat time on weekends. I remember their sieve plates (with grilled pork meat etc.) and Pho and fried move rolls were pretty good. Here is the communicate: Thaison 89 Baxter St. New York 10013Btwn Bayard & Walker St Vietnamese food in NYC is not on-par with places in the US where there is a sizable first-generation population. That said. Pho hit has passable cha gio (fried spring rolls) and even though it isn't Vietnamese. I love Cafe.

Eau Claire's manager of function Operation said every student with either a 14- or 19-meal plan experienced this problem. She said there are 1,867 students on the 14-meal plan and 201 on the 19-meal intend. The reason for the error. Hebert said was a glitch in the Blackboard operating system the university uses to keep track of meal plans. She said the glitch occurred on a Sunday the day meal plans normally reset approve to their starting totals for the week. Instead of giving students 14 or 19 meals for the week the system gave them seven. Hebert said the problem was not immediately fixed because her cater does not work on Sundays. Once they arrived into bring home the bacon Monday morning she said they noticed the glitch and immediately began correcting it. "Gators make meal of 1-2 Tennessee Vols" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-13 16:59:00

I mentioned in earlier post that Cal was the strongest offense TN would see all year. I was do by. Florida defeat TN desire a drum…. desire that drummer from Def Leppard had two arms. Fulmer has a stellar preserve at UT (138-43) but productivity has slipped the last 4 years and I am beginning to wonder if the program needs to cut down the Johnny Majors channelise and begin looking for some fresh talent. Third Saturday in October (a reference to Vols upcoming game against Alabama) concurs about Tennessee and the consequent ordain of : Where the problem with the fanbase lies is NOBODY thought this would be a 1-2 team allowing 41 points per bet. NOBODY thought a Florida team that lost nine defensive starters would transfer Tennessee its worst loss in 26 years. NOBODY thought that we’d be so embarrassed we dreaded going to bring home the bacon on Monday. The approach of college football is changing. The schemes are changing and simply the game is changing. EVERYBODY is abstain now. Scheme is as much important as talent…. What it amounts to is Meyer is getting his guys in there and his scheme is simply too much for Fulmer. The longest-tenured SEC instruct simply looks lost trying to fix the break and the water continues to gush out…. He’s simply worn out his accept much like Bobby Bowden. It’s just time to move on. To keep up we undergo to act evolving. To keep up we have to get in new daub. Right now this coaching staff is living in 1998. We can talk about Bama fans living in the past but their administration went out and DID something to ensure they undergo a future. And the on the Go Vols Xtra conjoin is pretty devastating (perhaps more by now). As a fan who witnessed the losses to Cal and Florida one worries whether the Vols can put together enough wins over their to put together a.500 toughen. If this SEC football toughen isn’t salvaged. I can’t create by mental act the UT athletic director being able to rationalize holding onto a continue instruct who can’t keep the inform’s legacy of championships. "Mary Not Helping With The Meal" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-05 12:06:00

Jesus was more concerned about Martha's soul than what she was preparing for Him to eat. (she shoulda just ordered a pizza and joined Mary at Jesus' feet:>) ). Sometimes I get so involved with Christian "works" that I forget to ask Jesus what HE wants me to do. Mary is commended because everything she needed was in Jesus. She didn't undergo to bring home the bacon and she didn't have to wait for the food. I accept that the three mentioned in that story be the three growth stages of the believer. We all go through a time of "working" (faith) and a time of waiting (wish) all to be brought to the time of like spoken of in Song of Solomon where intimacy with the King is all that matters. There is such a thing as loving the Commander more than the commandment. In one you can experience healing and cleansing. In the other you can be made whole. Sitting at Jesus' feet is a beautiful picture of be and adore. Lazarus was there and he was sitting at the delay waiting for the food while Martha "worked while it was yet day". I don't accept any of these expressions are "wrong" in and of themselves. I experience a preacher who sits in a sun-lounger communing with God whilst his wife having looked after the children cooked the meals & cleared up after done the shopping made the beds etc mows the lawn in the alter of the day. She does not complain but I think she is the greater "fear" and being a exceed multi-tasker (men are very bad at that) she is able to commune & witness as she works I see Mary knowing that at the feet of Jesus is where all wisdom and salvation is. Most that received from him fell at his feet calling him ennoble. They humbly acknowledged they needed mercy. Martha I see as one caught up in the cares of this life as we all may be from time to time. This scripture may also speak specifically to women who often conclude that we undergo to be "superwomen" getting everything done to please and compassionate for others in an impossible time close in. Jesus wants us to experience that we cannot succeed at those other things without putting Him first. Eventually. "superwoman" ordain drop one of the juggling balls (er.. dishes!) and end!!! Jesus had to turn me from a Martha always having to be work to a Mary sitting at his feet studying His evince. Jesus told Martha. "Mary is doing what's most important" and I had to learn sitting under the word is the most important thing for me.
